Entourage Defeats Crew 24-13
Team finishes season 4-2 and momentum entering playoffs.
Despite it being a game with no real playoff implications, Entourage
and the Stove Croft Crew were both looking for a win in Week 6. If
not for the momentum that a win creates going into the playoffs, for
Entourage it was a chance to finish their first TAFFL Coed season
above .500 and for the Stove Croft Crew, it was a chance not to
finish their inaugural season winless.
The Entourage would come out in full force, still missing their
Captain Sarah Price, who’s recovering from a knee injury suffered in
Week 4, and give the Crew a mouthful of Entourage football. Seven
different receivers would catch passes for Entourage and leading
Entourage passer Mikey Nicholson would lead the receiving charger
with two catches for a touchdown, to go along with a touchdown pass,
a rushing touchdown, two sacks and three tackles. It would be
Nicholson to Mark Kretzschmar that would get things rolling early on
and after a successful two-point conversion the team would find
themselves up 8-0. Stove Croft would respond nearly eight minutes
later when Andy Flinchum, brother of Co-Captain Laura Briscoe, would
find a wide-open Jennifer Borrelli to pull the team to within one,
8-7. Borrelli would lead all Crew receivers with three catches.
Not to be outdone, Entourage would rush back to increase their lead
16-7 when Josh Berengut would connect with Nicholson for the
touchdown. Beregut would finish also add a reception, a defensive
interception, and a tackle in the game. Neither team would add any
points before the half and after the break Nicholson would help to
increase the Entourage lead to 17 when he would rush for his fourth
rushing touchdown on the season making the score 24-7.
Stove Croft would rally late to add another touchdown (Tim Hall to
Tyrone Briscoe) to get within 11, however time would expire before
the team could really threaten the Entourage lead. The unusually
‘happy-hour’ Kieran Campbell would lead all Entourage receivers with
three catches, but could not quite ‘stumble’ into the endzone.
Next up for Entourage they will take their #3-seeding into battle
against the #2-seeded Hurricanes (5-1) in their Conference East
second round matchup. The Crew will finish the season winless and
as the #6 seed will face the #5-seeded Bombers (1-5) for a chance to
play the #1-seeded Royal Flush in Round 2. |

Gobblers Finish Season Undefeated 6-0
Rush fail in bid to upset the birds, 18-45
You can read every issue of the Wire since the start of Season I of
TAFFL Coed and it would read almost exactly as what you’re about to
read now.
Kevin Houston. Marcus Brown. Kevin Houston. Marcus Brown. Renee
Wilkerson. Kevin Houston.
Against the Rush in Week 6, the Gobblers would prove why their
record reflects 6-0 and why they have two potential male MVP
candidates, one female MVP candidate, and a host of honorable
mentions. The team would put on a clinic against the Rush
offensively and defensively in route to the 27-point victory.
Houston would throw for five touchdowns on the day, rush for
another, and take a Tony Buglak pass to the endzone for his fourth
Pick-6 of the season and the third straight game in which the
starting QB would score on a defensive interception. Catching two
of Houston’s touchdown passes on four catches would be league
leading WR Marcus Brown, who would also haul in a defensive
interception. Girl Gobbler Renee Wilkerson would catch four passes
for a touchdown in the game. Similar to what he has done most of
the season, Greg Lyons would make his presence felt by recording two
sacks of Rush QBs and also a touchdown catch of his own.
The Rush would battle valiantly throughout the game, but would be
unable to get the stops needed to keep the score close. Buglak
would finish the day with three passing touchdowns and two
interceptions and Amanda Street and Dave Schwab would lead the Rush
with three catches and a touchdown each.
The Gobblers now take their undefeated record and the #1-seed into
the Conference West playoffs and will face the winner of the
Rush/Mavericks play-in game. |

Hurricanes Blank Vice 14-0
Kappler’s magic runs out against League’s stingiest defense
After impressive showings in his last two outings, Jon Kappler and
the Carolina Vice were looking to extend their winning streak to
three games and despite the game having no playoff implications, the
team was at least looking to finish the season above .500. The
Hurricanes on the other hand, had already locked up the second seed
in the upcoming Conference East playoffs, however a win and a Royal
Flush loss in Week 6 would have propelled the Hurricanes into the
number one seed.
And as they have done all season, the Hurricanes defense was an
impenetrable wall that not even Kappler’s arm nor his legs were
strong enough to pierce. Eddy Gidney, who walked away with this
year’s sack title, would add two sacks to his league lead, including
a League leading fourth safety at the 10:10 mark, to put the
Hurricanes on the board first, 2-0. The safety would come after the
Vice defense had made a great stop of the Hurricanes on fourth down
and a yard to go. Neither team would add any points to their totals
the remainder of the first half.
It would take nearly half of the second half before the Hurricanes
defense would hold the Vice to a turnover on downs and subsequently
QB Sherell Dunn would connect with Cody Massengil to put the
Hurricanes up by 8. Kappler and the Vice could not capitalize on
the four interceptions thrown by Dunn, however Vice QBs would throw
two interception themselves. Kappler would haul in two of Dunn’s
passes with Ashley Shearin and Sean Bragg each picking off a pass as
well. Kim Dunn and interception leader John Branch of the
Hurricanes would be the recipients of the arrant Vice throws.
Branch would also be on the receiving end of a Cody Massengil pass
just as time expired to give the Hurricanes the 14-0 victory. The
Royal Flush would win their game against the Bombers and would set
the Hurricanes up to play the #3-seeded Entourage in their first
game of the Conference East playoffs. The Vice would finish the
season at .500 and as had already been determined a week prior, will
face the #2-seeded Dazz in their Conference West playoff matchup. |

Mavericks Succumb to Last Minute Loss…Again
Team doesn’t win a game in inaugural season
The Mavericks could have easily been 3-3 in this the first season of
the Triangle Area Flag Football League Coed, however three losses
all coming within two minutes or less would help to see the team
finish 0-6 and thankful that every team makes the playoffs. Against
the Entourage, Vice, and now in Week 6, against the Dazz, the
Mavericks would watch themselves take a touchdown lead into the
final minutes of the game just to witness the defense not close the
deal.
Dazz would finally score the game’s first points twenty-three
minutes in, when QB Jamal Seetram would connect with Dave Wood to
take the 6-0 lead into halftime. After the break, it would be all
Mavericks, as the team would score 16 unanswered points to take a
16-6 lead. QB and Captain Devin Harris would hook-up with Charles
Jonassaint to give the Mavericks an 8-6 lead. This was Jonassaint’s
first game back after missing the last two after sustaining an
injury in their game against the Entourage. Jonassaint would also
add a sack for a safety on Dazz’s next possession to make the score
10-6. With the momentum totally in their favor, Harris would then
lead the Mavericks on another scoring drive when Adam Wetter would
catch a pass and tiptoe the sideline to the outrage of the Dazz’s
Marvis Brown, who was adamant that Wetter had stepped out. However,
Senior Official Xavier Overton-El stood firm in his stance that
Wetter remained inbounds. This would give the Mavericks a 16-6
lead, but on the extra point attempt Conrad Groves would intercept
the Mavericks pass and race to the endzone for two points.
Needing to rebound quickly with time running out, Dazz would score
on its next possession when Seetram would use his legs to get the
team to within two, 14-16. Both teams would stall on their next
drives, however with one chance remaining and just over a minute to
go in the game Seetram would find Dave Wood again for this second
touchdown on the day and the eventual win, 22-16.
Dazz will face the Carolina Vice (3-3) in their first Conference
West playoff matchup and the Mavericks find themselves in the
play-in game against Rush (1-5) for a chance at the #1-seeded
Gobblers. |

Royal Flush Win Big Against Bombers 68-26
Team secures #1-Seed entering playoffs
For the Royal Flush it was win and be crowned the TAFFL Coed Season
I Conference East regular season Champions, lose and it was second
place. A situation that Captain and QB Marcus Cole had faced so
many times in his TAFFL Male career…a situation in which sometimes
he won and sometimes he lost. However, in Week 6 against the
Bombers, Cole was determined to walk away a Champion and him and his
team would, to the tune of a 42-point, 68-26 victory.
It was Cole’s best passing day of his Rookie Coed Season as the QB
tied the record for most passing touchdowns in a game with seven and
no interceptions. Cole was a passing machine completing pass after
pass to his Flush teammates. In all Cole, complete passes to six
different Flush receiver, with Errol Hood leading the charge with
five. Hood would finish the day with three touchdowns and a lateral
touchdown to go along with two tackles. Leading Flush female
receiver Christine Gregory would haul in three catches and a
touchdown, as well as two tackles. It was also Jonathan Burnette
who would turn in a big game for the Flush as he would pull in two
catches both for touchdowns and a defensive interception which he
return for a touchdown. It seemed as if the Flush were clicking on
all cylinders and look to be a tough foe to meet in the playoffs.
The Bombers on the other hand were not without their bright spots,
as the Bombers’ female receivers would do all they could to help the
team stay in a game that was quickly getting out of hand. Emma Ford
would be on the receiving end of four of QB Tomocus Alston’s passes,
however it was Eureka Swain who would tie Hood for the most
receptions in the game, as she would haul in a Bombers’ high five
receptions for a touchdown and a tackle. Jermaine Thomas would also
add a touchdown catch. The speedy Alston would finish the game for
the Bombers for with two touchdowns passing, two interceptions, and
two rushing touchdowns in the loss.
The Flush await the winner of the Round 1 play-in game between the
#6 Stove Croft Crew (0-6) and the #5 Bombers (1-4) to move a step
closer to the TAFFL COED CUP. |
